A Special Evening of Dialogue, Vision, and Alumni Solidarity
In the midst of the ASEAN University Network (AUN) meetings held in Manila, a rare and meaningful dinner brought together university leaders, alumni, and students in a gathering that seamlessly blended formality with warmth, intellect with laughter. Hosted by the NUS Alumni Network Manila, the evening featured NUS President Professor Tan Eng Chye, University of the Philippines President Angelo “Jijil” Jimenez, and NUS Associate Vice President for Global Relations Professor Lum Sau Kim—each an academic leader in their own right, and, notably, fellow NUS alumni.
Held on July 23, 2025 at Diamond Hotel Manila, the dinner was a celebration not just of the AUN meeting, but of academic partnership, regional solidarity, and the enduring spirit of service that defines the NUS community.
Over fine Japanese cuisine, guests were treated to what felt like an impromptu masterclass. Topics spanned from artificial intelligence and capacity building to the future of Southeast Asian universities, and the evolving expectations of lifelong learning and ethical leadership.
Professor Tan shared his vision of AI integration in higher education, offering perspectives from NUS’s own strategies in strengthening clean, high-quality datasets and building local capacity. He also expressed particular interest in understanding the current state of AI and IT capacities in the Philippine academic landscape, sparking conversations on collaboration and innovation.
Meanwhile, President Jimenez, an alumNUS himself (Public Policy ’13), offered candid insights from his leadership of the Philippines’ national university. His reflections on academic governance, inclusivity, and the power of transformative education deeply resonated with alumni and guests alike.
Professor Lum, a long-standing ally of the NUS alumni community in the region, warmly recognized the vibrancy and commitment of NUS Manila, affirming the chapter’s consistent engagement and active contribution to the University’s global vision.
A memorable highlight of the evening was the conversation between the university presidents and the NUS Overseas Colleges (NOC) Manila interns currently hosted by 101 Health Research. The young interns were invited to share their experiences and learning journeys, receiving personal encouragement and guidance from some of Southeast Asia’s most esteemed education leaders.
“How lucky our interns are to meet two university presidents!” remarked Dr. Venus Oliva Cloma-Rosales, Chairperson of NUS Alumni Network Manila. “They were even asked about their internship experience—what an inspiring, unforgettable opportunity.”
The dialogue underscored NUS’s belief in experiential education and global exposure as vital to developing future-ready leaders.
Joining the dinner were long-time stalwarts of the Manila chapter—Richard, Nestor, Lyndon, Vladimir—as well as fellow officer JM Buenagua. The gathering was filled with meaningful exchanges, shared memories, and renewed purpose.
“It was a joyful and intellectually rich evening,” said one alum. “We walked away with not only sharper minds, but fuller hearts.”
The weather, though unpredictable during Manila’s rainy season, thankfully held up—making the occasion feel even more serendipitous and special.
In a social media post following the dinner, President Tan expressed his appreciation:
“Delighted to kick off my official trip in the Philippines reconnecting with fellow NUS alumni based in Manila over dinner last night… Many of them are prominent leaders in their chosen fields, contributing positively to society and within their respective communities. Thank you for staying connected with our alma mater and contributing to the NUS alumni family.”
Evenings like this remind us of the extraordinary potential that is unlocked when leadership, education, and community come together. The NUS Alumni Network Manila remains committed to advancing these values—deepening ties, sparking conversations, and shaping the future of education in the region and beyond.
